A South Georgia man, 58-year-old Jon Worrell, was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, 39-year-old Doris Worrell, almost 20 years later, says authorities.
On Tuesday, the Coffee County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI placed Worrell under arrest in Marysville, Missouri, charging him with malice murder, felony murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated battery.
On Sept. 20, 2006, officers responded to Jon’s Sports Park, a business owned and operated by the couple in Douglas, Georgia, after Worrell told authorities he had found his wife’s body upon his return to the business. Officers discovered Doris Worrell had been shot to death.
During the initial investigation, the defendant told investigators he had left the business to run some errands around 9:40 a.m., while his wife stayed behind to clean the premises.
Authorities are not disclosing what led to the arrest, even though they have pursued leads domestically and abroad over the years. In 2016, the defendant was reported to have resided in Costa Rica with a Venezuelan national, Paola Yarberry, who was an 18-year-old immigrant working for the Worrells at the time of Doris Worrell’s demise, according to FOX 5.
Though Yarberry was in another location of the park during the fatal incident, authorities believed she had crucial information about the murder before she was deported.
Worrell is currently awaiting an extradition hearing in Missouri.
