A Worcester woman who killed four residents at her former apartment building will spend decades behind bars.
A Worcester County District judge sentenced 39-year-old Yvonne Ngoiri to four life sentences for the burning death of 47-year-old Joseph Garchali, 53-year-old Christopher Lozeau, 41-year-old Vincent Page, and 29-year-old Marcel Fontaine.
“We hope this result brings a measure of justice to the four families who lost a loved one, the three people who were injured, and the many others who lost their homes and belongings in this tragic fire,” said Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., reported 22 News.
Ngoiri pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder and several other charges, including arson, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
On May 14, 2022, authorities received a four-alarm fire report on 2 Gage Street. The fire reportedly engulfed the three-story apartment building, killing the four victims and injuring another resident who jumped out of the window to flee from the flames. Other residents were treated for smoke inhalation.
Later, investigators identified the Ngoiri as the perpetrator who set the building on fire intentionally. The defendant had been a former resident of the apartment building. Four months later, Ngoiri was arrested.
The judge sentenced Ngoiri to another 45 years in prison for the other charges. She will serve all sentences with eligibility for parole after 20 years.
