An Ohio man shot a woman to death in front of her 3-year-old son after his sister got into an altercation with her.

A Summit County Judge Christine Croce sentenced Denzel Pope to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the shooting death of 24-year-old Paige Calich. Pope was found guilty and convicted by a jury of two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault with firearm specifications, and one count of having weapons while under disability.

“I do not and will not tolerate gun violence in Summit County. There is no excuse for the act that ended Paige Calich’s life and robbed her young children of their mother. While nothing can make up for the loss of Paige, I hope this sentence offers a step toward healing for Paige’s family,” said Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich, reported WKYC Studios.

On July 28, 2024, the Akron Police Department responded to Calich’s Summit Lake apartment, two hours after the victim got into a physical altercation with the defendant’s sister, Corvette Pope, 26. According to prosecutors, the siblings walked from Corvette’s apartment in Cicero Plaza to Calich’s residence to confront the victim.

Upon arrival, Calich’s 3-year-old son came out of the residence first before Pope immediately shot her in the torso with a shotgun on her porch. Though Calich was rushed to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injury later. Then, both Pope and his sister fled the scene. The defendant was later arrested in Chicago.

Corvette Pope was also arrested and pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of obstructing justice. She was sentenced to 5 to 7 1/2 years in prison for her role in the fatal incident, according to 19 News.

Pope will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
